Rick McGillivray

Rick likes using various art styles, mainly drawing and illustration. He’s been working on quite a few different children’s books, illustrating and developing the characters and stories which he really enjoys. Rick has a couple that he thinks are finished.

“I’m inspired by many things around me, such as nature and animals, but also whatever I see around me. Right now, I’m really into printmaking. I enjoy creating a design in pencil and then transforming it through the carving and printing process to create a new kind of image. The carving takes time and requires careful attention. I feel like I’m still refining my carving technique, learning to take my time on the details. I’ve also been experimenting with different text styles in my work.”

In his current printmaking, Rick often combines song lyrics or funny sayings with animal characters—often ones that he and his sister suggest would look cool. He would also like to branch out into creating prints of iconic, recognizable items, such as ketchup bottles, with pop art themes and faces, using a stenciling style.
